What is naturalization apostille

The honest federal apostille San Jose path

A certificate of naturalization apostille authenticates your USCIS-issued naturalization document under the Hague Convention so foreign governments accept it as proof of U.S. citizenship abroad. Without this seal, an Italian comune won’t process dual-citizenship paperwork, an Indian consulate won’t issue your OCI card, and a foreign bank won’t open accounts.

Bay Area naturalized citizens request naturalization certificate apostille San Jose service for retaining country-of-origin citizenship, OCI India, retiring abroad, foreign property, and citizenship-by-descent claims.

  • Federal record issued by USCIS / Department of Homeland Security
  • Authenticated under the Hague Convention (1961, Article 1)
  • Required by foreign consulates, courts, banks, registries
  • Most countries also require certified translation

Important: Federal, not state

California cannot authenticate this document

USCIS issues this federal record. California Secretary of State will return it unprocessed. Only the federal authentication office in Washington, D.C. can authenticate federal records. If your document is state-issued instead — a birth, marriage or divorce record, or a diploma — that goes to Sacramento and is covered on our California apostille page.

Send the original certificate or a USCIS certified copy; we handle the DC submission — federal apostille San Jose service, mail-in welcome from all 50 states.

Common questions

Naturalization Certificate Apostille — common questions

Why can’t California Secretary of State apostille my naturalization certificate?
USCIS issues this federal record. California Secretary of State only authenticates state documents. Federal records go to the federal authentication office in Washington, D.C. — that’s why federal apostille San Jose service routes to the federal level, not the state level. We offer expedited naturalization certificate apostille in 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday). If you submit to the wrong office, it returns unprocessed.
How do I get a certified copy of my naturalization certificate (Form G-24)?
Phone USCIS at (800) 375-5283 and request a Certified True Copy appointment at your local field office. Bring your original record plus photo ID (passport or driver license). The USCIS officer attaches Form G-24 — that’s what we apostille for our naturalization certificate apostille San Jose clients.
How long does a naturalization certificate apostille take?
Our expedited federal service is $350 and takes about 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday) via FedEx priority both ways. Federal processing is outside our direct control — these are typical ranges.
Can I send you my original certificate instead of a Certified True Copy?
Yes. We accept either the original naturalization certificate or a USCIS Certified True Copy. Sending the original is usually the fastest route because there is no USCIS appointment to wait for, and we handle it with tracked shipping both ways. Choose the certified copy if you would rather keep the original at home.
Do I need translation for my naturalization certificate apostille?
Most non-English-speaking countries require certified translation — Italy, Spain, Mexico, India, Philippines, China, Korea. Add-on: $50 per 250 words, +$189 same-day, +$20 if notarized.
What if I’m going to a non-Hague country like the UAE or Qatar?
The remaining non-Hague destinations (UAE, Qatar, Kuwait) require federal authentication followed by embassy or consulate legalization. Call us — we coordinate the chain.
Can you help me with OCI India after the apostille?
We handle the certificate of naturalization apostille and translation. The OCI application itself goes to your nearest Indian consulate (San Francisco for Bay Area). OCI is one of our most common requests — bring the authenticated record plus translation if required.
I live out of state. Can I still mail you my certificate?
Yes — out-of-state mail-in is welcome from any of the 50 states. Mail your original certificate or Certified True Copy to our San Jose office. We file it in Washington, D.C. and ship it back tracked.
Why can I not just photocopy and notarize my certificate?
Because federal law prohibits it. Reproducing a certificate of naturalization is a federal offence, and a notary cannot certify a copy of one — that is why USCIS issues the Certified True Copy on Form G-24 instead. Any provider offering to notarize a copy of your certificate is telling you to do something unlawful.
How long does USCIS take to issue a Certified True Copy?
That step is with USCIS, not with us, and it is often the longest part of the process — sometimes several months. If you have a deadline, you do not need to wait for it: send us your original certificate instead, and the apostille is done in 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday.
Can I use my U.S. passport instead?
Sometimes, and it can save you months. Many foreign offices accept an apostilled copy of the passport data page as proof of U.S. citizenship in place of the naturalization certificate, and a passport copy can be notarized where the certificate cannot. Ask the receiving office whether they will accept it before you start the G-24 route.
Should I send my original certificate to be safe?
No — never mail the original, and we will not process one. It cannot be replaced quickly if it is lost, and replacing it means Form N-565 and a further wait. The Certified True Copy exists precisely so the original stays in your possession.
I need it for dual citizenship. What else will they want?
Usually more than the certificate — often an apostilled birth certificate, and a marriage certificate where a name changed, so the chain of names connects. Those are state records and take the California route rather than the federal one. Bring the consulate’s checklist and we will tell you which items go where.
Does the federal apostille expire?
The apostille carries no expiry, but the receiving office may want the Certified True Copy itself to be recent — often within six months. A new seal on an older G-24 does not restart that clock, so check before requesting anything.
Do I need a translation, and in what order?
Often, for a foreign registry. The order is fixed: apostille first, translate second — a translation attached before the seal is not covered by it. Some countries require a translator registered there rather than here, so ask before paying for either.
What does a naturalization certificate apostille cost?
$350 per document, the same as any federal document, covering document review, the Washington, D.C. filing and tracked handling. Translation, when your destination needs it, is priced separately. If you choose a USCIS certified copy instead of the original, the USCIS fee is paid to USCIS directly.
