FBI Apostille for China
fingerprints to seal in San Jose

China’s work (Z) visa requires an apostilled FBI background check. Since China joined the Hague Convention in November 2023, a federal apostille now replaces the old embassy legalization — a step many services still wrongly insist on. We fingerprint you, pull the report through an FBI-approved channeler partner, add the federal seal, and coordinate a certified Chinese translation.

Need an apostilled FBI report for a job, residency, or marriage in China? We take your fingerprints and handle the federal apostille from our San Jose office.

What you actually need

What an FBI apostille for China is

For a China work (Z) visa or work permit, authorities ask for a federal criminal record check — your FBI Identity History Summary — with an apostille, and usually a certified Chinese translation. A state background check is not accepted.

An FBI background check apostille is the certificate that makes the federal report valid in China. Because the report is a federal document, it requires a federal apostille issued by the U.S. Department of State — a California state apostille won’t be accepted.

What changed: China joined the Hague Apostille Convention in November 2023, so the apostille now stands on its own and the old embassy legalization step is gone for mainland China. We get the FBI report, apostille it, and coordinate the Chinese translation — the same way we handle every FBI apostille in San Jose.

One Stop, One Receipt

We apostille FBI reports in-house: walk-in fingerprinting, federal authentication, and coordinated Chinese translation.

Prints and seal in one place

We take your fingerprints, get your FBI report, and handle the federal apostille, so you deal with one office instead of three.

Common questions

China work visa apostille questions
answered straight

Does China require an apostilled FBI background check for a work visa?
Yes. Most China work (Z) visa and work-permit applications need a federal FBI Identity History Summary with a federal apostille. A state or local police check is not accepted.
Do I still need embassy legalization for China?
No. Since China joined the Hague Apostille Convention in November 2023, a federal apostille is sufficient for mainland China — the old embassy legalization step is no longer required. Many services still list it; it is outdated.
How recent must my FBI report be for China?
Most Chinese authorities want the FBI report issued within six months of submission, counted from the FBI issue date. Requirements vary by employer and local bureau, so confirm with your sponsor before you submit.
Do I need a Chinese translation of my FBI background check?
Often yes — many Chinese authorities require a certified Chinese translation of the apostilled FBI report. We coordinate a certified Chinese translation so your packet is complete.
Do I need a state apostille or a federal apostille for my FBI check?
Federal. Because the FBI report is a federal document, it needs a federal apostille — a California state apostille won’t be accepted. A state-level apostille on an FBI report is rejected.
Does my FBI report need to be notarized for China?
No. The FBI Identity History Summary is already federally certified, so it does not need notarization — and adding a notary seal can actually cause the apostille to be rejected.
How long does an FBI apostille for China take, and what does it cost?
The FBI apostille for China is $350 when you bring your own FBI report, or $450 including fingerprinting at our San Jose office. It takes 9 business days when your report is in our office by Wednesday, or 12 if it arrives after Wednesday. Any required translation is quoted separately.
Can you apostille my degree for the China work visa too?
Yes. Your university degree and teaching certificate usually need a state-level apostille for the Z visa, which our apostille services handle alongside your federal FBI report — one packet, one place. See our China apostille page for the state-side detail.
My employer wants it before the Z visa issues. What is the real timeline?
Two clocks, not one. The FBI report has to come back first, then the federal apostille runs 9 to 12 business days on the expedited route. If we take the prints here, both start the day you walk in. Tell us the employer’s date before ordering and we will say honestly whether it holds.
Can I open the envelope to check the report?
Better not to. An opened or home-printed report can be questioned, and re-ordering costs exactly the weeks you are trying to protect. Bring it as it arrived and we handle it from there.
Something came back on my report. Can you still apostille it?
Yes. The apostille authenticates the document, not its contents, and we do not assess what it says. What the Chinese authorities do with the information is their decision — and if it concerns you, one worth raising with an immigration attorney before you file.
I already have my report. Do I pay the $450?
No. If your report is recent and unopened, the expedited apostille alone is $350. The $450 bundle only makes sense when prints still need taking — we will not charge for a step you do not need.
My spouse and children are coming on dependent visas.
They usually need apostilled marriage and birth certificates rather than FBI reports. Those are state records and go the California route, which we handle in the same visit so the family packet stays together.
Can you also apostille a power of attorney for China?
Yes. A power of attorney signed in California takes a state apostille, not a federal one. We notarize and apostille it at our San Jose office, and our in-office partner TruPoint Legal can prepare it. See our power of attorney apostille page.
I live outside California. Can you still handle it?
Yes. The federal apostille is not tied to California, so mail or upload your FBI report and we return the apostilled packet. Only fingerprinting needs a San Jose visit, and if you already hold your report you do not need that step.
Someone quoted me for Chinese embassy legalization. Should I take it?
Ask them why. China joined the Hague Convention in 2023, so a single apostille replaced the consulate step. Guidance written before that is still circulating, and a provider quoting legalization to China today is either working from old material or selling you a step you do not need.
Which option should I pick?
If you already have a recent FBI report, the $350 apostille is all you need. If you still need fingerprints, the $450 package covers the prints, the report, and the federal apostille in one visit.
