FBI Apostille for Spain
fingerprints to seal in San Jose

Spain requires an apostilled FBI background check for the Non-Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, student visa and residency — carrying a federal apostille, not a state office, and paired with a sworn Spanish translation. We fingerprint you, pull the report through an FBI-approved channeler partner, add the federal seal, and coordinate the sworn Spanish translation.

Need an apostilled FBI report for a job, residency, or marriage in Spain? We take your fingerprints and handle the federal apostille from our San Jose office.

What you actually need

What an FBI apostille for Spain is

For a Spain visa, the consulate asks for a federal criminal record check — your FBI Identity History Summary — with an apostille attached and a sworn Spanish translation. Only the FBI report is accepted; a state background check is not.

An FBI background check apostille is the certificate that makes the federal report valid in Spain under the Hague Convention. Because the FBI report is a federal document, it requires a federal apostille issued by the U.S. Department of State — a California state apostille is rejected.

Then Spain wants the document translated by a sworn translator (traductor jurado). We get the FBI report, apostille it, and coordinate that sworn translation — the same way we handle every FBI apostille in San Jose.

Common questions

Spain visa apostille questions
answered straight

Does Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa require an apostilled FBI background check?
Yes. The NLV, Digital Nomad Visa, student visa and residency all require a federal FBI Identity History Summary with a federal apostille. A state or local police check is not accepted.
Does Spain require a sworn Spanish translation of the FBI check?
Usually yes — Spain requires a sworn Spanish translation (traducción jurada) by a translator recognized by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A regular certified translation may be rejected, so we coordinate a sworn translation with your apostille.
How recent must my FBI report be for Spain?
Most Spanish consulates want the FBI report issued within 90 days of submission, though some visa categories allow up to 180. The clock starts on the FBI issue date, so expedited processing matters when an appointment is set.
Do I need a state apostille or a federal apostille for my FBI check?
Federal. Because the FBI report is a federal document, it needs a federal apostille — a California state apostille won’t be accepted. A state-level apostille on an FBI report is rejected.
Can you do the whole thing in San Jose, in Spanish?
Yes. You walk into our San Jose office, we fingerprint you and pull the FBI report through a channeler partner, handle the federal apostille, and coordinate the sworn Spanish translation — all explained in Spanish or English.
How long does an FBI apostille for Spain take?
The federal apostille takes 9 business days when your FBI report is in our office by Wednesday, or 12 business days if it arrives after Wednesday. If we also take your fingerprints, add the time to receive your FBI report, which often arrives within hours.
What does the FBI apostille for Spain cost?
The FBI apostille for Spain is $350 when you bring your own FBI report, or $450 including fingerprinting at our San Jose office. It takes 9 business days when your report is in our office by Wednesday, or 12 if it arrives after Wednesday. Any required translation is quoted separately.
Which Spain visas need an apostilled FBI check?
The Non-Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, long-term student visa, NALCAP teaching assistantship, work visa and residency permits generally require it. Short tourist stays do not.
My consulate appointment is in three weeks. Will it arrive?
Tell us the date before you order anything. Expedited runs 9 to 12 business days once the FBI report is in hand, and the report itself takes time to come back. If the date will not hold we will say so rather than take the order and let you find out at the counter.
Spain consulate appointments are impossible to get. Does that change anything?
It raises the stakes rather than the process. A slot you waited months for is not one you want to lose to a document that is not ready or not accepted. That is why it pays to start early.
Can I get the sworn translation done before the apostille?
No, and doing it in that order is the most common reason a Spain file is sent back. The apostille goes onto the report first, then the sworn translator works from the apostilled document so the translation covers the seal as well.
My report came back with something on it. Can you still apostille it?
Yes. The apostille authenticates the document, not its contents, and we never assess what the report says. What the Spanish consulate does with the information is their decision and, if it concerns you, one to discuss with an immigration attorney before filing.
My spouse and I are applying together. Do we each need one?
Yes, each applicant needs their own report, apostille and sworn translation. We take both sets of prints in the same visit and keep the packets moving together so they are ready on the same day.
I already have the FBI report. Do I need fingerprinting again?
No. If your report is recent and unopened, we apostille what you have at the $350 expedited rate instead of the $450 bundle. The bundle only makes sense when prints still need taking.
I live outside California. Can you still handle it?
Yes. The federal apostille is not tied to California, so you can mail or upload your FBI report and we return the apostilled packet. Only the fingerprinting step needs a San Jose visit, and if you already have your report you do not need it.
Do you handle my birth and marriage certificates for Spain too?
Yes, though they travel a different route. Those are state records, like a power of attorney signed here, and take a California apostille rather than a federal one, which our Spain apostille page covers. Sending a state record to the federal office, or the reverse, is what sends files back.
