What is a birth certificate apostille

A walk-in path to
international recognition

A California birth certificate apostille authenticates your CDPH or county recorder certified copy under the Hague Convention so foreign authorities accept it as legally valid abroad. Without this seal, an Italian comune won’t process your jure sanguinis claim, the Indian consulate won’t issue an OCI card, and a foreign school won’t enroll your child.

Bay Area applicants most often apostille a birth certificate for Italian citizenship by descent, OCI cards, Spanish or Portuguese dual citizenship, marriage abroad, K-1 visas, school enrollment, and spousal immigration. We offer walk-in apostille service in San Jose — same-day, rush, and expedited options, plus translation in 100+ languages.

Bring a CDPH-issued or county recorder certified copy — hospital souvenir copies, photocopies, and downloads cannot be authenticated. Most foreign authorities prefer copies issued within 6 months. Out-of-state mail-in welcome from all 50 states.

Italian citizenship by descent

Jure sanguinis applications

Italian comuni require apostille birth certificate for Italian citizenship plus parents’ and grandparents’ copies — often 3 to 5 birth certificates per applicant. Bundle for 50% off each additional doc.

Hague seal + Italian translation
OCI / Indian dual citizenship

OCI card application

Indian consulates require an apostille for OCI applications — both yours and parents’ if applying through ancestry. Hindi or Punjabi translation often required.

Hague seal + Hindi/Punjabi translation

Foreign passport for child

Authenticate child’s vital record for foreign passport when one parent holds foreign citizenship — Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Germany.

Hague seal + local-language translation

Common questions

Birth certificate apostille
questions answered

How fast can I get my birth certificate apostille San Jose service?
Standard runs ~30 days, expedited ~2 weeks, rush 3–5 business days. Same-day available when you submit before 10 AM — back by 6 PM. Most jure sanguinis and OCI clients pick rush service.
I’m born in California but live out of state. Can you still help?
Yes — out-of-state California birth certificate apostille is one of our most common scenarios. The apostille can only be issued by California, regardless of where you live now. Mail your certified CDPH or county recorder copy from any of the 50 states.
Do you offer same-day birth certificate apostille?
Yes — Same-Day service is $450 per document. Submit your CDPH or county recorder copy before 10 AM, apostilled and back by 6 PM. After 10 AM, we drop to rush service available with 3–5 business day return.
Can you handle Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis)?
Yes — jure sanguinis is one of our specialties. The process typically requires 3 to 5 certified copies (yours, parents’, grandparents’). Bundle them all in one visit for 50% off each additional doc on rush tiers, with Italian translation in-house.
Do you handle OCI card applications?
Yes — OCI authentication is one of our highest-volume services. Indian consulates require apostilled California vital records plus parents’ if applying through ancestry. Hindi or Punjabi translation provided in-house.
Will my country require translation of the document?
Most non-English-speaking countries require certified translation — Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Germany, India, Mexico, China, Korea. Translation is a separate add-on: $50 per 250 words, +$189 same-day, +$20 if notarized.
Do I need a CDPH copy or a county recorder copy?
Either works for CDPH birth certificate apostille processing. CDPH issues statewide certified copies. County recorder offices (Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo) issue local certified copies. Hospital souvenir copies, downloads, and photocopies cannot be apostilled.
What if I’m going to a non-Hague country like the UAE or Qatar?
For the remaining non-Hague destinations (UAE, Qatar, Kuwait), you need California state authentication followed by U.S. Department of State authentication and embassy legalization. Call us — we coordinate the full chain.
The hospital certificate with the footprints — is that the one?
No, and this is the most common wasted trip we see. The souvenir certificate from the hospital, however official it looks, is not a government record and cannot be apostilled. You need a certified copy issued by the county recorder or the California Department of Public Health, with the raised or coloured seal.
Mine is a photocopy. Can you work from that?
No. An apostille goes onto an original certified copy, not a reproduction of one. If what you have is a photocopy, scan or laminated version, you need a fresh certified copy from the issuing office first. We would rather tell you that now than after you have paid.
My certificate is 30 years old. Is it still usable?
The certificate does not expire, but the office receiving it abroad may require one issued recently — often within three or six months. A new apostille on an old certificate does not restart that clock. Check the age requirement with the receiving office before ordering anything from us.
My name changed after marriage. Does that cause a problem?
Not for the apostille, but often for the filing. Your birth certificate carries your name at birth, and the receiving office may want the marriage certificate apostilled too so the chain of names connects. Mention it when you come in and we will tell you whether you need both.
I was adopted. Which certificate do I use?
The amended certificate issued after the adoption is the one on record, and that is what gets apostilled. Some processes abroad ask for more than that, which is a question for the receiving authority rather than for us — bring their checklist and we will tell you which parts are ours to seal.
I need several certificates for the same application.
Yes, on every tier except the $85 standard one. Above standard, each additional document is 50% off. Doing them together also means one review, one submission and one collection, with no risk of one certificate taking a different route or carrying a different date from the rest.
Which tier do I actually need?
Tell us your deadline and we will name the cheapest one that still makes it. The seal is identical at every speed — you are paying for the calendar, not a better document. If your consulate appointment is three months out, standard is the right answer and we will say so.
What gets a birth certificate apostille refused?
A photocopy or hospital souvenir instead of a certified copy, a translation attached before the seal rather than after, an underlying certificate the receiving office considers too old, or the document sent to the federal office when it is a state record. Each costs weeks.
