FBI Background Check Apostille
Upload your report. We handle the rest.

Need an apostille on your FBI background check for a visa, residency, work permit or adoption abroad? Upload your FBI report with your online order from any state — nothing to mail — and we file it for federal authentication in Washington, D.C. If you do not have the report yet, walk in to our San Jose office and we fingerprint you through our FBI-approved channeler partner. Expedited service runs about 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday) at $350 flat, against roughly six weeks if you file it yourself. Walk in at 434 Blossom Hill Road, San Jose, or order online and mail your report from anywhere in the U.S.

Only one office in the country can apostille a federal document, and it is in Washington, D.C. You cannot walk in there, there is no local alternative, and sending it yourself runs into weeks of mail and waiting — usually with a visa appointment or a start date already on the calendar.

Need an FBI background check apostille for a visa, work permit, or adoption? National services typically quote three to four weeks, and mailing it yourself runs 5–8 weeks. We check your report before it is filed so problems are caught early, give you one person to call, and turn it around in 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday).

What is FBI apostille

FBI background check apostille for use abroad

The FBI Identity History Summary apostille is the federal authentication that turns your background record — sometimes called a “rap sheet” — into a legally recognized document in over 120 Hague Convention countries. The seal is issued by the federal authentication office in Washington, D.C.

Without an FBI background check apostille, the report has no legal weight outside the United States. Foreign embassies, employers, adoption agencies, and immigration ministries require this federal seal before they’ll process a visa, residency, work permit, marriage license, or adoption file overseas.

Two parts to the process: getting the document itself, then getting it authenticated. Most providers only handle one of those steps. Our service handles both under one roof.

Out of state? We are your
nationwide FBI apostille agent

Nothing to mail. Start your apostille order online from any state, then upload your FBI background check through our secure, upload-only link — only we can open it. No postage, no transit days, no risk of losing the original. With your order and upload in by Wednesday, the federal apostille is completed in 9 business days (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday) and shipped to you; delivery time and shipping cost depend on your state.

Moving abroad with more than one record? We also handle the apostille for a naturalization certificate (original or certified copy) and every other federal document apostille, at the same $350 per document and the same turnaround, in one order.

Filing it yourself is the slow route: mailed requests to the federal office run 5-6 weeks and often longer, and one mistake on the paperwork sends it back unprocessed. We are a nationwide mail-in apostille service and remote apostille processing agency for FBI reports from any state — and a walk-in office for Silicon Valley at 434 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, Mon–Fri 9–6, with a multilingual front desk.

The federal apostille satisfies the Hague Convention requirement for the world’s most-traveled destinations. These are the countries our clients most often need authentication for:

Why San Jose chooses us

The Bay Area’s one-stop FBI apostille office

The large national services handle FBI apostille by mail only, and most do not touch California state apostille at all — no birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas, or powers of attorney. We’re the rare provider that handles both ends — with help from our partner TruPoint Legal for clients who need extended legal-document support.

One Stop, One Receipt

Walk-in fingerprinting plus federal authentication under one roof. Skip mailing your FBI report to a third party.

One Flat Price

$350 per FBI report, with the whole submission handled for you rather than mailed in yourself.

Fast When You Need It

Both options deliver in roughly 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday). Rush-week visa start dates are doable.

Where we serve

FBI apostille for Silicon Valley

Our office sits at 434 Blossom Hill Road in South San Jose, on the Highway 85 corridor. You get fingerprinted here rather than mailing cards across the country.

Mountain View

No need to mail fingerprint cards anywhere. Drive down the 85, get printed in our office, and we run the FBI report and the federal apostille from the same file.

Palo Alto

Where an institution abroad wants the federal FBI report authenticated rather than a state background check, we handle both halves and tell you where things stand at each step.

Sunnyvale

Fingerprinting takes minutes in the office. The federal authentication is the slow part — 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday) on the expedited track.

Cupertino

If you are working to a fixed deadline, mention the date when you book. The expedited track runs 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday) from submission, so we can tell you early whether it fits.

Outside Silicon Valley? If you already hold your FBI report, we can arrange pickup and return for a travel fee based on distance. If you still need fingerprinting, that has to happen in person at our San Jose office, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM. Call (408) 766-3528 and we will tell you which applies to your situation.

Common questions

FBI apostille questions
answered straight

When do I need to submit to make the 9 business days?
By Wednesday. Submit by then and your apostille runs 9 business days — roughly two weeks in real time. Submitted after Wednesday, it runs 12 business days. If your deadline is tight, come in early in the week rather than at the end of it, and tell us the date you need it by — we will say honestly whether it makes it.
Can you apostille my FBI report if I live in another state?
Yes — we act as a nationwide apostille agent for FBI background checks, and you never mail us the report. Start the order online from any state and upload your FBI report through our secure, upload-only link. With the order and upload in by Wednesday, the federal apostille is completed in 9 business days (12 if submitted after Wednesday) and shipped to you. Shipping cost and delivery time depend on your state.
Is mailing it to you faster than filing it with the federal office myself?
Yes, and by a wide margin. Mailed requests to the federal office run 5-6 weeks and often longer, and a mistake on the form sends it back unprocessed. With us you post nothing: upload the report, and once the order is in by Wednesday the apostille is completed in 9 business days (12 if submitted after Wednesday) and shipped to you.
How do I get an apostille on my FBI background check?
An FBI background check is a federal document, so only the federal authentication office in Washington, D.C. can apostille it. The California Secretary of State cannot. We handle the federal submission for you: upload your FBI report with your online order from any state, bring it into our San Jose office, or start with fingerprinting here if you do not have one yet.
Do you offer expedited FBI apostille service?
Yes. Expedited FBI apostille is $350 flat and runs about 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday). It is built for visa, residency and job-start deadlines abroad.
Is an FBI apostille accepted in every country?
It is accepted in countries that belong to the Hague Apostille Convention. Non-Hague countries such as the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait require embassy legalization instead of an apostille, so confirm your destination country with us before we submit.
How long does an FBI apostille really take?
Expedited service runs about 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday). The federal government controls the seal step itself — we fast-track submission and pickup, but don’t set the turnaround. For the bundle, the Channeler step adds only a few hours since results are often within minutes, then we authenticate the FBI report directly.
I live in another state — can you still apostille my FBI report?
Yes. Your FBI background check is a federal document, apostilled only in Washington, D.C., so your home state does not matter and there is no in-state version. Order online from anywhere in the U.S., upload your FBI report through our secure link — nothing to mail — and we submit it for federal authentication and ship the authenticated report back to your address or to an embassy.
Do I need an FBI apostille or a state-level apostille?
It depends on the document. FBI background checks are federal, so they require a federal apostille issued in Washington, D.C. State-issued documents (birth certificates, marriage licenses, diplomas) get a state-level apostille from your state’s Secretary of State. If your destination requested an FBI report or “police clearance” specifically, you need this federal authentication service.
What’s the FBI Identity History Summary apostille for?
It’s the official authentication of the FBI document listing any criminal history record information from federal databases — sometimes called a “rap sheet” or “FBI clearance letter.” Foreign visa, work permit, adoption, and residency applications use this document as proof of clean federal record. The federal seal is what makes it valid abroad.
Can I use a digital FBI report for the apostille?
Yes, as long as it is the official file. Upload the electronically signed PDF exactly as you received it from the FBI or an FBI-approved channeler, and we prepare it for federal authentication. Screenshots, photos of a screen, or edited files are rejected, so send the original file, not a copy of it.
How recent does my FBI report need to be?
Most foreign embassies require the FBI report to be issued within 3 to 6 months of submission abroad. Some are stricter (UAE often wants 90 days). If your existing report is older, the bundle is usually faster than waiting for a new standard FBI request.
Will my FBI apostille be accepted in non-Hague countries?
No — non-Hague countries require embassy legalization instead of an apostille. After the federal authentication, the document goes through the destination country’s embassy or consulate for an additional stamp. We can advise on the right path during your appointment.
Can you mail my apostilled report directly to the embassy?
Yes — we can ship the authenticated FBI report directly to a foreign embassy, consulate, employer, or any address you specify. Just provide the destination at the time of your appointment or email it to us before pickup.
Where do I apostille an FBI background check?
Only one place issues it: the federal authentication office in Washington, D.C. There is no California counter and no local office that can apply the federal seal, so every FBI apostille goes to Washington regardless of where you live. We prepare and submit it from our San Jose office, then ship the authenticated report back to you.
Is there an FBI background check apostille near me?
If you are in the Bay Area, our office at 434 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose is the nearest walk-in provider that handles both halves — fingerprinting and federal authentication. Anywhere else in the country, the answer is that no provider is truly local, because the seal itself is applied only in Washington. Order online and we handle the submission from here.
What is the FBI background check apostille processing time?
About 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday) on the expedited track. That window is set by the federal authentication office, not by us. If you also need the report itself, the Channeler step adds only hours because results usually come back the same day, so the federal authentication remains the part that governs your timeline.
What if my FBI report shows a record I want to clear up?
If the record is incorrect, you can request an FBI challenge before the authentication step. If the record is accurate but old or sealed, the authentication still applies — we authenticate the document, not its contents, and the foreign agency decides what to make of it. For legal advice about your record itself, speak to a licensed attorney before you file.
Should I open the envelope to check the report first?
Better not to. An opened or home-printed report can be questioned at the authentication stage, and re-ordering costs exactly the weeks you are trying to protect. Bring it as it arrived and we take it from there.
I already have my report. Do I pay the $450?
No. If your report is recent and unopened, the expedited apostille alone is $350. The $450 bundle only makes sense when prints still need taking — we will not charge you for a step you do not need.
What is the real timeline if I start from nothing?
Two clocks, not one. The FBI report has to come back first, then the federal apostille runs 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday) on the expedited route. If we take the prints here, both start the day you walk in. Tell us the date your visa appointment, employer or consulate needs it and we will say honestly whether it holds rather than take the order and hope.
My family is applying too. Do they each need one?
Adults usually each need their own report where one is required; children generally do not. Everyone tends to need the marriage and birth certificates connecting the family, and those are state records taking the California route. We handle both sides in one visit so the packet stays together.
Do I need a translation, and in what order?
Often, depending on the destination. The order is fixed: apostille first, translate second — a translation attached before the seal is not covered by it. Several countries also require a translator registered there rather than here, so ask the receiving office before paying for either.
Which option should I pick?
If you already have a recent FBI report, the $350 apostille is all you need, at 9 business days when submitted by Wednesday (12 business days if submitted after Wednesday). If you still need fingerprints, the $450 bundle adds walk-in fingerprinting at our San Jose office.
Can you apostille my state documents at the same time?
Yes, and most people need both. Birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas and notarized affidavits are state records and take a California apostille rather than a federal one — our apostille services page covers that route. Two authorities, two timelines, one office handling both.
What gets an FBI apostille refused?
Most often the report was sent to a state office instead of the federal one, the envelope was opened, or the report had aged past what the receiving country accepts. The seal itself is rarely the problem — the routing and the timing are.
